Fenty Beauty Loose vs Pressed Powder: Which Setting Powder Should You Buy?

If you’ve been keeping up with Fenty Beauty’s recent launches, you might be wondering why they dropped two different setting powders within just two months. First came the Bright Fix Instant Brightening + Blurring Powder (pressed) in July, followed by the Set It Down Superfine Blurring Setting Powder (loose) in September, marketed as the “new and improved” version of their previous setting powder.

Here’s what’s actually happening: Fenty Beauty isn’t trying to confuse you or push duplicate products. They’re solving two completely different makeup problems that most brands incorrectly lump together. The difference isn’t just about loose versus pressed formulas. It’s about creating targeted solutions for specific skin concerns and application methods.

Understanding Fenty’s Strategic Approach

Not all setting powder needs are the same. Some days you need colour correction in specific areas. Other days you need invisible, all-over oil control. Most brands force you to compromise with one product that tries to do everything. Fenty Beauty created two specialized products instead.

Bright Fix: The Strategic Color-Corrector

You know what I love about the Bright Fix Instant Brightening + Blurring Powder? It’s not trying to be everything to everyone with some random rainbow of shades. Instead, each individual shade is laser-focused on solving specific issues, and the science behind the shade selection is honestly brilliant.

These aren’t just pretty shades. They’re correcting. Each shade is designed to be applied exactly where you’d normally highlight with concealer (your forehead, chin, and under-eyes) but with the added genius of color theory doing the heavy lifting.

Lavender isn’t just trendy; it’s working overtime to cancel out yellow undertones in those key highlight zones for fair to medium skin tones. You know that sallow cast that makes your under-eyes look tired even when you’re not? Gone.

Rose Quartz is tackling green undertones head-on on fair to light-medium complexions. Think about it: your T-zone, your chin, sometimes even under your eyes can have that weird greenish cast from veins or discoloration. This rosy powder neutralizes it while brightening.

Banana is the MVP for light to medium skin tones dealing with purple or blue undertones in their highlight areas. It’s like having a color-correcting concealer and setting powder in one, brightening while erasing those shadows that make you look perpetually exhausted.

Peach gets serious about blue and purple discoloration on light to medium-deep skin. Those stubborn dark circles? That blue-ish cast on your chin? This orange-based powder cancels it out while giving you that lit-from-within glow.

Cinnamon and Pumpkin are where the real innovation shows for medium to deep and deep skin tones respectively. Finally, deeper complexions get targeted color correction that actually works. These warm, rich shades neutralize blue and purple undertones while brightening. No more ashy finish or colors that just don’t translate.

Set It Down: The Invisible All-Over Finisher

LAVENDER and STRAWBERRY MILK are doing that translucent powder thing but with a twist. The lavender adds brightness to fair skin without that chalky white cast, while strawberry milk gives just enough warmth to prevent that ghostly flashback effect we all hate in photos.

BUTTER is smart for light-medium tones because it’s neutral enough to disappear but warm enough to complement natural undertones. No more looking like you dusted yourself with flour.

BANANA here is playing a different game than the color-correcting version. This is pure setting power with that signature yellow undertone that brightens without being obvious. It’s become the gold standard for good reason.

CASHEW and HONEY are where things get interesting for medium-deep skin. These aren’t trying to lighten or brighten drastically, they’re working with your natural tone to set makeup seamlessly while adding just enough warmth to keep everything looking natural.

CINNAMON and MOCHA for deep skin tones are honestly revolutionary. For too long, deeper complexions had to choose between invisible powders that left an ashy finish or going without setting powder entirely. These actually enhance the skin’s natural richness while providing that locked-in finish.

The genius here is in the undertones. Each shade isn’t just darker or lighter, it’s carefully calibrated to work with the natural undertones at each depth level. It’s setting powder that actually gets how different skin tones behave, rather than just offering a one-size-fits-all translucent option.

Why Your Makeup Bag Needs Both (Or Just One)

Let’s talk portability first because honestly, what good is amazing makeup if you can’t touch it up? Bright Fix wins here hands down. That sleek rectangular compact with the built-in mirror? It’s basically designed for your purse. No powder explosions, no awkward loose powder situations in public bathrooms. Set It Down, on the other hand, is a homebody. The loose formula gives you incredible control when you’re at your vanity with proper brushes and time, but good luck taking that on the go without creating a mess.

Then there’s the skill factor. Bright Fix is genuinely foolproof. The pressed format means you get consistent pickup every time, and it’s pretty hard to overdo it when you’re just hitting your highlight zones. If you’re still figuring out color correction, this removes the guesswork.

Set It Down rewards technique but demands it too. You can build it up for serious baking or apply it barely-there for a natural finish, but there’s definitely more room for error. It’s for people who’ve mastered the art of powder application.

If you’re currently juggling separate color-correcting products, Bright Fix simplifies everything by handling correction and setting in one step, exactly where you need it most. But if you’re someone who loves the full baking experience and wants that my skin but better, locked-in finish everywhere, Set It Down integrates seamlessly with traditional techniques and gives you that coveted professional result.

Who Actually Needs What

If you’re team Bright Fix, you probably relate to at least three of these: your under-eye circles have their own zip code, you’re always rushing out the door and need products that multitask, your concealer has commitment issues by lunch, or you’ve been intimidated by color correction but know you need it. This isn’t just setting powder, it’s problem-solving powder for people who want their makeup to work harder.

Set It Down people are different. You’ve got your color correction game locked down already. You live for that baking moment in your routine, you need serious oil control that lasts all day, and you want your setting powder to be completely invisible. You’re not looking for correction, you’re looking for insurance that your existing makeup stays exactly where you put it.

And then there are the maximalists who honestly might need both. Maybe you’re someone who does full glam on weekends (hello, Set It Down for serious baking) but needs something foolproof for busy mornings (enter Bright Fix). Or you travel constantly but also love a detailed routine when you’re home. If you’re a makeup enthusiast who appreciates having the right tool for every job, this might be you.

Let’s Talk Money (Because These Aren’t Drugstore Prices)

At $37-38 each, we’re not talking impulse buy territory. But here’s the thing: what are you currently spending to solve these problems?

Bright Fix could potentially replace that color corrector you bought plus whatever setting powder you’re using. Suddenly that $37 starts looking like consolidation rather than splurge. Set It Down is replacing your current setting powder, full stop. The question isn’t whether it’s expensive compared to drugstore options. It’s whether having genuinely invisible, bulletproof setting power is worth the upgrade from whatever’s currently letting you down.

What This Actually Means for Oily, Hyperpigmented Skin

Traditional setting powders often force an uncomfortable choice between effective oil control and avoiding that dreaded ashy finish. Fenty’s dual approach provides specialized solutions that address this common dilemma.

For oily skin and stubborn dark circles: Bright Fix tackles the specific challenge of under-eye area that gets oily throughout the day while dealing with discoloration. My full Fenty Bright Fix review on oily skin shows it genuinely helped control oil in my under-eye area while neutralizing purple undertones, without that chalky buildup that usually happens by midday.

For overall oily skin and hyperpigmentation: Set It Down works across your entire face to control oil without interfering with color correction. My complete Set It Down review confirms it delivers serious oil control and staying power all over without making dark spots appear ashy or altering the foundation work I’d already done underneath.

Finally tried a tubing mascara. Heard lots of good things about the @toofaced Ribbon Wrapped Lash mascara so I had to give it a try and see if it’s actually worth the hype.

First of all, I love how this formula doesn’t flake or run! Perfect for those of us with watery eyes 😭
Love this mascara but I personally prefer more volume so I mainly wear it for when I want to look put together in every day settings
